What I'm Working on: Kingdom Come

I haven't posted for a bit, so I thought I should give you an update.  I have a few things coming up and a new novel in the works. COMING UP:

APRIL:  an anthology of 4 novellas called "Stitch" is coming out from Dreamspinner Press.  The anthology includes novellas by myself, Jamie Fessenden, Kim Fielding, and Sue Brown.  All the novellas have a Frankenstein/created man theme.  I'm excited about this and hope it does well.  Here's the cover.

StitchFS FINAL FROM PAUL

JUNE:  I'll have a story in this year's Dreamspinner's Daily Dose, a novella called "Heaven Can't Wait".  Also in June or July, "The Mating of Michael" comes out. It's my first full-length m/m novel (73K words) and is the 3rd in the Sex in Seattle series.  It stars Michael Lamont, a sex therapist, and I hope you all love it as much as I do!

IN PROGRESS:

I'm working on a novella for the next gothika anthology that's a m/m romance and gothic Voodoo-themed story. It's tenatively called "The Bird".

"Kingdom Come" -- I'm also currently writing a novel that's a bit different for me. It's a murder mystery with a m/m romance.  I have written and published mysteries before, in my 'past life', but I haven't done one in a few years, and never with a m/m romance element to it.  The book is set in contemporary Lancaster County, PA, where I currently reside. The plot involves the Amish culture.  One MC is a homicide detective and the other is a young Amish widower.  The mystery is quite heavy and dark.  I hope to see it published in 2014.  Here's a little taste of a visual I have been using to inspire myself.  (NOTE:  This is not a book cover, just a little wallpaper I made for myself.)  Click for a closer view.

That's all the news for now.  Enjoy the early spring and I'll post more about "Stitch" soon!

"Heaven Can't Wait" novella to be in Dreamspinner's "Daily Dose" June 2014

I just got the news that my novella "Heaven Can't Wait" will appear in Dreamspinner's Daily Dose this year.  If you're not familiar with Daily Dose, it goes like this.  You can subscribe to the whole Daily Dose package and receive a new short story or novella in the mail every day in June.  "Heaven Can't Wait" will also be available for individual sale after June 1st, 2014. Here's the image I used for inspiration for my two MCs Chuck and Kevin.  (This picture is Ty Roderick and Max Carter from CockyBoys):

And here's the *temporary* blurb I submitted along with the manuscript.

Brian Matheson died at the ripe age of nineteen.  In heaven he’s informed that his soul is in a limbo state.  He’ll have one last chance to redeem himself before he’s thrown into a very nasty pit. All Brian has to do is return to earth and save a life. The trick is, it’s the life of Kevin, his friend Chuck’s roommate. See Kevin is gay, and Brian and all his pals picked on him, making his life a misery.  Still, Brian can see the error of his old ways now.  And he can succeed at this challenge, turn Kevin’s life around, and avoid going to hell.  Easy peasy.  Right?

Kevin thought he’d left bullying behind in high school.  But then his college roommate, Chuck, showed up and turned out to be friends with a bunch of gay-baiters.  They loved to come over and give Kevin a hard time, so he spent as many hours as he could in the coffee shop.  He was lonely and shy and he was depressed, but he had to hang in there until another room opened up.  That and keep his eyes off his drop-dead sexy, uber-straight roommate.

Everyone thought Chuck was a tough guy. He looked the part so he acted the part. But what none of his friends knew is that Chuck, on the inside, was nothing at all like the exterior.  He tried to be like all the other guys, but being stuck in a dorm room with the prettiest, gayest twink he’d ever seen was so not helping.

If Brian can untangle this mess, he’ll deserve his wings.  Good frickin’ luck.

As you can probably tell, it's got some humor, some paranormal, and some sexy UST.  The novella is 17.4K words long.

Just Finished: Heaven Can't Wait novella

heavens-gate1

I just finished writing/editing a 17.5K work novella called "Heaven Can't Wait".  It's a humorous, bit sexy, m/m romance. I have submitted it to an anthology.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Here's my (temp) blurb for the story:

Hopefully the story will come out in the summer 2014.

Cover Reveal: Puzzle Me This

puzzlemethis_br

I've always loved Reese Dante covers so I was thrilled when Dreamspinner assigned her to do the cover for my novella "Puzzle Me This".  I love how it turned out.  The image of Alex, in his wheelchair, following Luke and Trevor (the dog) on a path is perfect for the story.  And notice how the crossword grid works into it -- clever, right?  ;-)  And of course the smiling face (Alex) is just gorgeous.

Here's the official blurb for this title:

Luke Schumaker  designs computer games,  working from his home.  Every day he walks his dog in the woods nearby, never suspecting that someone is watching who is completely smitten. The watcher is Alex Shaw, and he too works from home, designing logic and crossword puzzles. Alex’s options are limited: he’s too shy to approach Luke and his wheelchair won’t  let him follow into the woods. His solution? Secret messages for Luke in the crosswords he writes for the local paper.  When Luke decodes them, romance begins, but then they face greater puzzles, like Alex’s interfering sister, and what commitment to a man in a wheelchair really takes. And, most puzzling of all, how do you know if love is real?

This novella will be published from Dreampsinner in the Sept/Oct 2013 timeframe.  No firm date yet!

Desktop: "The Trouble With Tony"

It's release day for "The Trouble With Tony!" Whenever I write a story, I like to google images for inspiration.  Sometimes they’re for mood, sometimes they’re characters (major and minor), sometimes they're locations, and sometimes they’re things like a building or a shop or a car that I just like to have a visual reference for.  I thought it would be fun to share these with readers.

** Note:  I own none of these images – they’re from google.  These images were not used in the book, but if you have a problem with my having an image on this website, please email me and I’ll remove it.

So without further ado, here’s my “Trouble with Tony” desktop:

TONY DEMARCO

Tony is an Italian-American private detective from Brooklyn now living in Seattle (in part to elude his big, Italian-American family who don't know he's gay).  He was a cop for six years but decided to to go it alone as a P.I. after being shot in the leg.   He’s very funny.

I had several images on my desktop to inspire me to write Tony’s character.  Here’s my favorite:

DR. JACK HALLORAN

Our other MC, Dr. Jack Halloran, was a combat surgeon in the US Army for 8 years until an I.E.D. damaged his left arm, making it impossible for him to do surgery.  His PTSD made even working in an ER impossible.  He’s now a sex therapist for Expanded Horizons.  He’s not a big guy, but he’s a serious bad ass.

I searched for a 'blonde doctor' image to inspire me and I like the attitude on his face.  This one made it onto the cover!

MICHAEL LAMONT

Oh, Michael!  I’m currently working on Sex in Seattle #3, which is Michael’s story, but he makes his first appearance in “The Trouble With Tony”.  I love this character!  Michael is a sex surrogate and also does in home nursing care part time.  He’s slightly built, very cute, and extremely compassionate/empathetic.  In my head, Michael is physically based on Isaiah Garnica.

SETTING: SEATTLE’S CAPITOL HILL

The story is set in Seattle, mostly in and around Capitol Hill, a gay district in Seattle that’s up on a hill (hence the oh-so-brilliant name).  My husband and I had a house on Capitol Hill for 15 years and I love the neighborhood!  I greatly miss it.  Here are a few scenes of this funky/cool area.

EXPANDED HORIZONS

Expanded Horizons is the name of a (entirely fictional) sex clinic on Capitol Hill around which the series revolves.  I pictured it on Pike Street between Broadway and 15th, which is an area I walked often.  It’s not a very big building. The clinic has a waiting room with receptionist area, three therapists offices, a staff kitchen and meeting room and a, ahem, massage room.  This is about the style/size of the building.

DISCOVERY PARK

I’m an avid hiker, so I worked a few of my favorite places to hike into the story.  Tony meets up with his police detective buddy, Mark, to discuss the case at Discovery Park, a Seattle park that I miss dearly now that I’m no longer in the area.  It has a beach, lighthouse, woods and trails on a bluff, and gorgeous views.

MT RAINIER’S SKYLINE TRAIL

One of my favorite hiking trails of all time is the Skyline Trail at Mt. Rainier.  It's quite high in elevation.  You can hike right up to the glacier and the views are spectacular.  Being above the treeline, the flowers and vegetation are really different from most NW forests.  Tony and Jack discuss the Skyline trail earlier in the book and then the epilogue takes place there.

That's it for this desktop!  I hope the pictures add to your enjoyment of the story.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

Sex in Seattle #2, "The Enlightenment of Daniel," has been written and contracted to Dreamspinner and is due out in the Dec/Jan timeframe.  This story is about a patient of Jack Halloran's.  Daniel is a high-powered Type A business man who has a midlife crisis when he learns his father is dying of cancer.  Daniel comes to several life-altering realizations --first, that he's gay and secondly, that he's in love with his male business partner who is in a marriage-in-name-only relationship for the sake of his kids.

Sex in Seattle #3, "The Mating of Michael" (working title), is my next writing project.  Tentative pub date is April 2014.  This is, of course, the story of Michael Lamont, sex surrogate for Expanded Horizons.  I'm very excited to bite into this one!

"A Prairie Dog's Love Song" to appear in Dreamspinner's advent calendar!

tumblr_mm12cyfFMl1qmkli8o4_1280 My Christmas novella "A Prairie Dog's Love Song" has been selected to appear in this year's Dreamspinner advent calendar!  I'm thrilled.  I'm a huge Dreamspinner fan, and I've gotten their advent calendar for the past 3 years so it's a milestone for me to have a story in it.

"Prairie Dog" will be one of the longest stories in the advent at 21K words.

Here's the temporary blurb:

Joshua always had the notion that he and his best friend’s kid brother, Ben, would end up together.  Ben’s a diehard cowboy, just like Joshua.  But Joshua waited too long and was too deeply in the closet for Ben to have any idea of his intentions.  Ben runs away from their small Montana town to be a gay-for-pay porn star in Vegas.  When Joshua finds out he’s determined to finally declare himself and bring Ben home.  But Ben may not be as easy to tame as the Joshua’s ‘lost cause’ horses.

Ben Rivers always was a showman.  He won awards in 4-H and Rodeo competitions from the time he could walk.  When he got the chance to be a star—in gay porn—he took it.  He loves Montana and everything about being a cowboy.  But when news of his alternate identity leaks out he figures he’s lost the town’s goodwill forever.  Besides, Clyde’s Corner would never accept an openly gay cowboy, would it?

It will take a lot of love and holiday spirit for Joshua to convince Ben that even an old prairie dog can learn a few new tricks.

And some more inspirational photos...

Countdown to “Tony” — Second excerpt and Giveaway!

  tony_cover_br

My m/m romance novella “The Trouble With Tony” releases on Aug 21!  It’s a light-hearted contemporary romance in which a Seattle private eye (Tony DeMarco) investigates the murder of a young woman by pretending to be a new patient at a sex clinic where she was being treated.  Much to his dismay, he starts to fall for steely-eyed, ex combat surgeon Dr. Jack Halloran, the murder victim’s therapist and a likely suspect.

This is the book first in a new series called “Sex in Seattle” that revolves around a Seattle sex clinic–its doctors, patients, and surrogates.

Now, let's see what Tony and Jack are up to, shall we?

THIS WEEK'S EXCERPT:

Dr. Halloran stood up and went to the door of his office, where a white doctor’s coat hung on a hook. He started putting it on. “As I mentioned, before we can start treatment, I need to do an exam. I have to rule out any obvious physical issues first.”

“I can assure you, Doc, the plumbing is fine down there,” Tony said, now definitely panicking.

“Oh? When was your last physical?”

Tony tried to joke. “Me? I’m Italian, I’m male, and I’m under fifty. I wouldn’t go to a doctor unless my eyeball was hanging out so far I could floss with it, or my piss was the color of pink lemonade, maybe even bloody mary mix.”

Halloran turned to him with a raised brow, blocking the door and folding his arms, his feet slightly apart. “Uh-huh. That’s what I thought. Do you want me to treat you or not, Mr. DeMarco? Because if you’re not serious about this, I’d rather you not waste both our time.”

His posture, his voice…. Tony had an odd sense of déjà vu. It was as if his mother had suddenly inhabited the body of a slim blond doctor.

“I… I am serious, Doc. But—”

Halloran pointed to an exam table set against the back wall of the office. His voice was so cold it could have sunk the Titanic. “Then go over to that table and drop ’em.”

Tony tried to think of a way out, but Halloran’s face was set in a give-me-ten-soldier mask that would make babies cry, plus he was blocking the door. Tony figured he could get past him if he had to. Well, maybe. Halloran was obviously tougher than he looked. How much military training did they give combat doctors, anyway? But even if he could force his way out, Halloran would be done treating him, and Tony wouldn’t have a way into the clinic.

Besides, what if Halloran could really help with his little trouble?

Five minutes, it’ll be over. Five minutes, it’ll be over. His face burning with shame, Tony stood and slunk to the exam table like he was going to his doom. God, please just let me die, quickly and painlessly. In the next ten seconds would be good.

“How do you want me to…?” Tony started lamely.

“You can just lean against the table and take down your trousers and underwear, please. It’s best if you’re standing.”

Halloran went to a cabinet and turned his back. He washed his hands and started taking out a few supplies, giving Tony a moment of privacy. Tony undid his belt buckle and pushed his black pants and briefs to his thighs. He leaned back against the table, grateful for the support. Fortunately, the tails of his shirt gave him a little modesty.

Five minutes, it’ll be over. Five minutes, it’ll be over.

Yeah, but during those five minutes, a murder suspect is going to be looking at my dick. How did that happen?

Jack walked over. As he drew close, Tony felt a nauseous flutter in his stomach. He closed his eyes.

“That’s fine, Tony. Close your eyes and relax.”

It sounded suspiciously like something a serial killer would say. Tony bit his lip as he felt hands unbutton the lower buttons on his shirt and tuck the ends to either side. A cool breeze wafting over his dick let him know he was exposed. Nice.

Oh, the romance!  LOL.  Nothing like meeting over a prostate exam to cement a budding attraction.  I wonder how it goes?

Here's this week's excerpt:

Jack headed back to the clinic’s front door—and walked right into Tony DeMarco, who was exiting the dark clinic.

Jack blinked at him, stymied. “Tony! What… what are you doing here?”

“Uh… hi, Doc,” Tony looked shocked himself, and very guilty. The look lasted only seconds before Tony schooled his features into a picture of smiling innocence.

Jack’s eyes narrowed suspiciously.

“The door was open,” Tony said.

“It was?” Damn Loretta. Jack was going to have to speak to Trudy about her first thing in the morning.

“Yeah, so I just popped my head in to see if you were around.”

“But why are you here so late? We didn’t have an appointment.”

Tony was blushing and extremely uncomfortable. He clutched at the front of his coat. “Um….”

Suddenly, Jack got it. He relaxed and smiled. “Ah. It’s okay, Tony. Come on in.”

Jack went into the clinic and turned on the lights. Tony followed with all the enthusiasm of a dog being sent to its emasculation. He stood in the waiting room awkwardly, not looking at Jack.

Jack stuck his keys in his pocket and folded his arms. “Talk to me,” he said in his calm, doctor’s voice. “What’s going on tonight? Are you feeling sexually aroused?”

Tony got a surprised look on his face. “Er….”

Jack had treated a good number of men who struggled with erectile dysfunction. One thing they all had in common was that when the urge did strike, they wanted to do something about it right goddamn now, because they didn’t know how long the urge might last or when it might reappear. It was like a starving man trying to snatch the last cookie off the conveyor belt. One patient had called it “hallelujah time.” You did not fuck with hallelujah time. The surrogates knew that when they were working with an E.D. patient, they were on call twenty-four-seven.

“It’s all right. I understand. But why did you come here? There’s no one you can—?”

“No. I, uh, thought the clinic might be open late. It was stupid. I’ll go.” Tony looked like he wanted to dig a hole, hide in it, and then cover it with a cement foundation.

“Hang on.” Jack unzipped his coat. “It’s all right. I don’t have any place I have to be. Tell me what you’re feeling. Are you erect right now?”

Tony froze.

Jack smiled. “Am I going to have to use euphemisms?”

“That would help, yeah,” Tony said in a strangled voice.

“Right. Are you at half-mast, full-mast, or is the sail still on the deck?”

“Um… half-mast?”

“And you feel like you could get to full-mast?”

Tony looked at Jack with an expression of amused disbelief. “Yeah, pretty sure I could.”

Jack considered it. He hadn’t laid out Tony’s surrogacy plan yet, hadn’t even fully decided there would be one. Okay, he’d been avoiding it like it was the six-month-old tub of yogurt at the back of the fridge. Anyway, Michael [the clinic's gay surrogate] had mentioned in their last staff meeting that he was going to the islands this weekend. So even if he were willing to jump in on such short notice, he wasn’t around.

“Would you like to try some touch therapy—a light massage? No pressure, just see what happens,” Jack offered, keeping his face and voice determinedly neutral.

“With you?”

“Yes.”

Tony glanced to the door, seemingly torn.

“If you’re not comfortable with that, it’s fine. Just let me grab some files, and I’ll walk you out.”

Tony took a deep breath and seemed to make up his mind. His eyes met Jack’s and he licked his lips. “Okay, Doc. Let’s see whatcha got.”

Excerpt from "The Trouble With Tony"

tony_cover_br My new novella, "The Trouble with Tony," is coming in August from Dreamspinner Press.  Yay!  It's the first in a new series of stories that revolve around a sex clinic in Seattle.

Here's the blurb:

As part of the investigation into the murder of a young woman, Seattle P.I. Tony DeMarco poses as a patient of Dr. Jack Halloran, the therapist who treated the victim at a Seattle sex clinic. This isn’t the first time Tony has gone undercover, but it’s the first time he’s wanted to go under cover with one of his suspects. He can’t help it—Jack Halloran is just the kind of steely-eyed hero Tony goes for. But he’ll have to prove Halloran’s innocence and keep the doctor from finding out about his ruse before he can play Romeo.

Dr. Halloran has his own issues, including a damaged right arm sustained in the line of duty as a combat surgeon in Iraq and the PTSD that followed. He’s confused to find himself attracted to a new patient, the big, funny Italian with the puppy-dog eyes, and Tony’s humor slips right past Jack’s defenses, making him feel things he thought long buried.  But can the doctor and the P.I. find a path to romance despite the secrets between them?

And here's the first chapter:

~1~

Marilyn White was dead. She’d been prom queen, elementary school secretary, blueberry muffin maker, and Yahtzee champion in her household since the age of eight. And now she had a headstone and a closed case file with the Seattle police.

Tony DeMarco liked to know these things about his lost souls. It hurt more, made it more personal. But it also enabled him to see into the victim’s circle of friends and family a little more clearly. If there was a snake in the grass, he wanted to step right the hell on it.

“You’re late,” Detective Mark Woodson complained as Tony slid into a booth.

“Hey, I’m buying lunch, aren’t I? Stop whining or you’ll end up with a glass of tomato juice and Saltines.”

They shot the shit until the burgers arrived. Tony caught up on the macho soap opera that was the Seattle Police Department. He’d given them five good years until a bullet in the leg had made him rethink his priorities. He hadn’t exactly been in the closet when he was on the force, but he didn’t announce it either. Add being naturally awkward on top of being gay, and Tony was never going to make cop of the year. As a private eye, he worked alone and could cherry-pick his cases depending on how much he felt like risking his nuts at any given moment. He didn’t usually do murder, but he hadn’t been able to resist that photo of Marilyn White, with her long brown hair, smattering of freckles, and million-dollar smile. And he couldn’t say no to the grief on her parents’ faces when they’d begged him to take the case.

“So… Marilyn White.” Mark shook his bald head morosely. “Between you and me, I’m glad to see someone pick up the ball on that one.”

“You don’t buy the coroner’s ruling of accidental overdose?”

“No history of drug abuse. How dumb do ya have to be to take a whole bottle of antidepressants in one go?” Mark snorted derisively into his cup of coffee. “I’m tellin’ ya, Tony, this is what’s wrong with the world today. Everybody does the bare minimum, takes the easy solution. No one can be bothered to pull something out of the assembly line for two seconds and really fucking consider it. The coroner’s office is no different.”

This was surprisingly philosophical coming from Mark. Tony felt a surge of admiration for him that lasted nearly five seconds. Then Mark gave a hearty belch. He pounded his chest with a fist. “’Scuse me. Heartburn.”

“So who do you think did it?” Tony asked. “The husband?”

Mark grunted. “Isn’t that your job? What was I just saying about being lazy, dickweed?”

“Yeah, yeah. Just asking your opinion. Because, you know, you’re my hero. I wanna have your babies.”

Mark snorted. “Get in line.” He looked around, as if making sure they weren’t being listened to. He lowered his voice. “The husband is out. He has an alibi. But if the chief hadn’t made us drop the case, you know what I would have been on like white on rice?”

“No, Mark. That’s why I’m asking.”

“Shut up. We found out from Marilyn’s insurance records that a few months before her death she started going to a sex clinic.” He whispered this last with barely moving lips, as though a lip reader might be in the vicinity.

“What?”

“Yeah. Place called Expanded Horizons on Pike. It’s legit—you know, they treat frigidity and erectile whoosits and all that sort of thing.” Mark knocked on the wooden table. “God forbid.”

Tony felt a flush of embarrassment and a niggling pain at the words. With an effort, he pushed it aside. This was about Marilyn, not him. Tony pictured her as she’d been in her photos—not yet thirty, slim, and beautiful. “Why would Marilyn need to go to a sex clinic?”

Mark barked a laugh. “No fucking clue. Naturally, I went and interviewed her doctor, a guy named Jack Halloran. But all I got outta him was a chill the size of Alaska. Doctor-patient confidentiality, he says. Sexual issues are extremely sensitive, he says. Doesn’t matter that she’s dead, her wishes for privacy have to be honored, he says. Yadda yadda. I’m telling ya, the guy’s got balls of steel. I tried everything—good cop, bad cop, vague threats, a lollipop…. He never even blinked.

“But get this,” Mark continued, leaning forward with a gleam in his eye. “At this sex clinic, they don’t just do psychobabble, they do sexual surrogacy. You know—a little sexual healing between the sheets. So I figure this Halloran, maybe his relationship with Marilyn got a little deeper than it shoulda. Pun intended.”

“No way,” Tony said. “They have sex with patients? Isn’t that illegal?”

Mark shrugged. “Consenting adults, ‘medical therapy’, etcetera. Nah, it ain’t illegal. They’re actually licensed for that shit.”

Tony sat back in the booth, chewing his lip. He didn’t like the sound of that. Or maybe he did. A clear suspect made his life easier. “How come you didn’t get a warrant for her medical records?”

Mark looked disgusted. “I tried, but then the coroner’s ruling came in and the case went in the hopper. You know how it goes. Like every other asshole in this city, we got too much shit to do and too little time to do it.”

Yeah, Tony knew very well. The homicide department picked up suspicious deaths from the moment the body was found, but it was best not to get too attached. A case would close in a snap if the coroner didn’t rule homicide. They couldn’t have one branch of the city paying for work another branch said was unnecessary. It was a shame, but that gave Tony plenty of work if he wanted it, helping families like Marilyn’s when the cops wouldn’t.

“You get anything at all on Halloran?” Tony asked.

Mark sighed. “I dug around. Medical degree from U-dub. Top of his class. Get this—he was a combat surgeon in Iraq ’til eighteen months ago. Wounded and shipped home. The guy’s either a fucking super hero or a walking time bomb. You can make up your own mind about that one.”

Tony raised an eyebrow at Mark: And what do you think?

“Ka-blam,” Mark said.

~2~

Ka-blam!

Bombs were going off everywhere. The infernal noise and the concussion of the shock waves battered Jack’s body and pierced his eardrums. He was running as fast as he could, but it was hard with his arms twisted behind him and the heavy weight of a gurney in his hands. Somewhere back there, Smith, a hospital corpsman, was holding on to the other end of the gurney. And between them was a bleeding mass of flesh that had once been a strapping youth and was now a dying boy. That boy would either make it or not, depending on how fast Jack could get him away from the twisted wreckage and back to the BAS.

Move it, move it, move it, move—

There was a blinding explosion and everything went black. There was no pain, only a profound shock and numbness Jack had thought was death.

He landed on the floor next to his bed. The pain of bashing his leg in the fall jarred him awake even as the scream tore out of his throat.

“NO!” he yelled to the guiltless dark.

Jack poured a cup of coffee in the small staff kitchen at Expanded Horizons. The tremor in his right hand was worse than it had been in weeks, thanks to the nightmare, and it made the simple task a chore. He hadn’t had a nightmare like that in exactly fourteen days, according to the log his therapist had encouraged him to keep. The time between them was slowly growing, but that didn’t make it any less shattering when they occurred.

Jack grimaced and mentally spelled out the steps for himself, just like he’d been taught. Plant the bottom of the cup firmly on the counter, release it, pour carefully with his left hand, put the coffee pot back. It had taken awhile, but by now, it was habit—always, always hold the drink in your left hand.

The shrapnel from the explosion had sliced and diced his right arm as if he’d run into a hailstorm of Ginsu knives. He was lucky not to have entirely lost it, but his friends back at base had pulled out all the stops. Jack still had the arm, but there was nerve damage. In other words, he’d never be very good with chopsticks, his friend and co-doctor, Colonel Rick Mayberry, had teased. Rick hadn’t added, Or perform surgery ever again.

Major Jack Halloran. At thirty-six he was a light bulb in a prehistoric cave, the best of his skills now useless.

He’d tried. Once the worse of his physical recovery was over, he’d pushed himself and had gotten a job in a Seattle E.R. But one night they’d wheeled in a motorcycle crash victim and the blood and trauma had triggered him. When he came to himself, he was huddled in the corner of a supply closet, his face wet with tears. The hospital didn’t argue when he turned in his resignation.

Bulb. Cave.

That’s how he’d ended up at Expanded Horizons. Sam, an old friend from medical school, was married to the clinic’s owner, Trudy. She was one very smart lady doctor. She offered to give Jack a chance if he’d attend an intensive training course in sexual counseling. He had, and she did.

Jack supposed he was good at it. It was ironic. He’d always been a gay Lothario, cheeky, horny, and an unrepentant flirt. In the Army, the doctors and nurses had called him Mighty Jack Halloran. It was a bit of an affectionate jab at his modest stature, at least he’d assumed so, but mostly it was about his ability to enter any bar and pull a man. He’d been the kind of guy who’d get up and dance on the bar if he’d had a few. Not a shred of shyness. Back then, he’d never thought twice about sex as a biological function that could fail. It was just pleasure, a very agreeable release that could help him forget the stress and the blood for a while. Now here he was, tending other people’s libidos for a living. And even as he lectured his patients about how everyone needed—and deserved—human contact, his own sex life had never been worse.

Life sure had a twisted-as-fuck sense of humor. Hardy har har.

“Your schedule, Dr. Halloran,” Loretta said in a cheerful voice.

Jack put his coffee cup carefully down on the counter and turned to her with a professional smile. “Good morning, Loretta.”

She gave him the day’s computer-generated itinerary on a sheet. “You look like a cat someone hit with a truck,” Loretta said, peering near-sightedly into his face.

“Same to you,” Jack said politely. He put his itinerary on the counter, and his good hand went up to his hair self-consciously to smooth it down.

“No, the eyes,” Loretta said. “Federal Express.”

“Your honesty is so refreshing.”

Jack scanned his appointments for the day. There was Mr. Federman, a man with deep sexual insecurities, Mrs. Kendle, an eighty-six-year-old who refused to give up on her sex life (and good for her), and Mr. Rose with diabetes-related E.D. There was a new name, though, at ten o’clock.

“Was she worth it?” Loretta asked. Jack looked up to see her forced smile and the nervous fluttering of her eyelids.

“Loretta,” Jack said patiently. “I’ve told you before, I’m gay. There were no hot assignations last night, more’s the pity. And if there had been, it would have been with a he.”

“Sure,” Loretta said with a small, hurt shrug. “I understand.”

Jack mentally rolled his eyes. The clinic’s receptionist was a redhead with proportions so generous they bordered on philanthropic. She was thirty-eight going on twenty, and for some reason, she was quite smitten with Jack.

“Seriously,” Jack told her with his no-nonsense stare. “Gay.”

“I get it,” Loretta gave a put-upon sniff that said she didn’t believe a word.

Jack sighed and glanced back down at his schedule. Loretta had marked lunch in Trudy’s office. That only occurred if his boss wanted to talk to him about something. He felt a trickle of worry but pushed it aside. He’d find out what it was about soon enough.

“Who’s this Tony DeMarco, ten o’clock?”

“Male, thirty. He asked specifically for you. He didn’t want to discuss his trouble over the phone, so I guess you’ll just have to be surprised.”

Jack frowned. He didn’t like surprises.

That's it--I hope you'll enjoy it.   I'll post when it is available for pre-order.

Christmas in May? Two new yuletide romances written

  christmas

Writers, like store merchandise buyers, must work several seasons ahead.  That's why I find myself writing sexy holiday stories in May.

I've just finished two novellas destined for submission to holiday anthologies.  Both are m/m romances with some heat and some sweet.  Here's a little teaser of both....

A Prairie Dog's Love Song --

Joshua always had the notion that he and his best friend’s kid brother, Ben, would end up together.  Ben’s a diehard cowboy, just like Joshua.  So when Joshua learns that Ben has moved away from their small Montana town to be a porn star in Vegas, he can hardly believe it.  He’s determined to finally declare himself and bring Ben home.  But Ben may not be as easy to tame as the Joshua’s ‘lost cause’ horses.

Ben Rivers always was a showman.  He won awards in 4-H and Rodeo competitions from the time he could walk.  When he got the chance to be a star—in porn—he took it.  He loves Montana and everything about being a cowboy.  But when news of his alternate identity leaks out he figures he’s lost his home town’s goodwill forever.  Clyde’s Corner could never accept an openly gay, ex porn star cowboy, could it?

It will take a lot of love and holiday spirit for Joshua to convince Ben that even old prairie dogs can learn a few new tricks.

Genres:  m/m romance, contemporary, light humor, cowboy, holiday

Blame it on the Mistletoe --

When  super nerd Fielding Monroe and skirt-chaser Mick Colman become college housemates, they're both in for a whole new education.  Mick is good at looking out for the absent-minded genius, and he helps Fielding discover all the childhood pleasures his strict upbringing denied him.  They become best friends.  It's all well and good until they run into a cheerleader who calls Mick the 'best kisser on campus'.  Fielding has never been kissed, and he decides Mick and only Mick can teach him how its done.  After all, the physics department's Christmas party is coming up with its dreaded mistletoe.  Fielding wants to impress his peers and look cool for once in his life.

Can Fielding convince his straight roommate to give him lessons in love?  Anything can happen at Christmas.

Genres:  m/m romance, contemporary, light humor, college, holiday

These stories will be out Christmas of 2013.  I'll post publication info when I have it.

What's New, What's Coming -- April 29, 2013

the-lion-and-the-crow-cover Just Finished:

I just finished my novella "The Lion and the Crow", a historical m/m romance about two medieval knights.  I wrote this for the "Love Has No Boundaries" event hosted by the m/m romance group on goodreads.  This story will be published FREE in Jun 2013.  I turned the final draft in on Friday.  Yay!  I'm excited about this story--it was the first time I've written in this time period.   I hope people enjoy it.  Here's the goodreads link.

Just Starting:

My next writing project is a new story called "A Prairie Dog's Love Song."  This will end up being a long short story or a novella and involves... cowboys and porn.  Yup.  I developed the idea for this story for a cowboy anthology submission, but I'm not sure if this story will end up going to that or elsewhere (as is often the case).  This is a contemporary with light humor and homespun charm.

Just Released:

Last week my first two published m/m stories came out.  "A Kiss in the Dark" in a Dreamspinner anthology called "Closet Capers" and a stand-along fairy tale story called "Before I Wake" from Torquere Press.  You can read blurbs and excerpts on my site by clicking on the book jackets to the right ("Before I Wake" is the one with mushrooms).
